I don’t know about you, but when I go to YouTube, I check my subscriptions and then look at what videos are currently popular. Because you know, it’s important to stay up to date on the most current news about kittens, people getting caught doing weird things, and movie trailers. The YouTube Trends Map is another way to see what’s popular, but from a geographic and demographic point of view.

Now that I’m leaving the east coast for the ~crescent city~, I am really into NYC for an odd reason. I feel like we’re on similar wavelengths (a word I like to overuse these days). I’ve gone from wanting NYC to love me, being terrified of NYC, being so ANGRY at NYC, and until recently just plain over it. But after two back-to-back visits, I’m like HEY, we get each other. We can almost get along. FINALLY. You growl at me and I roll my eyes. You’re marching in my direction without looking up for a bullshit reason (an iPhone), but I can deal, because you know what? I can always go back to Philadelphia.

I probably made this mix on my 2007 iPod to cope with a Chinatown bus trip that took ~70-80 mins, which is the best way to get to NYC from Philly. However, it smelled and all kinds of people were crazy. Here’s my 2013 thoughts about my 22-23 year old mindset in 2007:

1. I was probably hoping I would go to a cool party

2. Hoping to hook up with some hot dudes (probably hooked up with half of Philly at that point oops)

3. Hoping to get photographed for a fashion blog or a party photo site

4. Hoping to get discovered for being ~me~

5. None of those things happened nor they ever will (thank god).

TRACKLIST W/ COMMENTARY

1. TRACK 1 (I never know what this song is because a college friend put it on a mix and I lost the linear notes)

2. TRACK 12 (definitely Gary Numan/Basement Jaxx used it for Kish-Kash song)

3. TRACK 09 (see 1 - very disorganized playlist so far remember I was 22 all I cared about was parties and boys)

4. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (college fave/wanting life to be like a liberal arts college)

5. Glass Candy - Life After Sundown (proof that it’s not-awesome jazzy interlude tho)

6. The Faint - Symptom Finger (from the album that they were trying way too hard/but song is totally underrated and still into in 2013/ lots of vocoder OOOS)

7. Francisco - Fits (now wanting to pretend my life is like an italo disco song)

8. Escort - Starlight ( see 7/really want to D.A.N.C.E. all night)

9. Dee D. Jackson - Automatic Lover (gawd there are like NO boys for me in Philly in 2007. Nor 2013. Nor are they in New York. Guess I need an “AUTOMATIC LOVER”)

10. Gino Vannelli - Mama Coco (wow problematic song that only robotsinheat.com could get away with posting. or probably not. I was really bad at being a hipster.)

11. DJ Mehdi - Signatune (Thomas Bangalter Edit) (OMG why the fuck did I need this edit to last 4 minutes. O right I am working in an office but personal life is all new rave, which would crash along with the market. I also wanted boys to think I was cool)

12. Mr. Flash - Disco Dynamite (I have no idea which is the title or which is the ~artist~ but see 11)

13. Cansei De Ser Sexy - Fuck Off is Not the Only Thing You Need to Show (lol I really like them but I think I wanted to channel this song to appear tough in CASE I went to the Metropolitan Bar and ran into that boy I was politely (and legally!) stalking on Dlist.com)

14. The Cardigans - Never Recover (A part of me wants to say that I did the 90s while everyone else did the 80s. But really I have never left the 90s nor I ever will because I am still 14 and still love the Cardigans)

15. Chromatics - Hands in the Darks (god I want my life to be a soundtrack)

16. Chromeo - Ah Oui Comme Cai (let’s fake french so this Williamsburg dude feels compelled to make out with me)

17. Cocteau Twins - Lorelei (I have a soft side that no New Yorker can ever know about but if they ever find out they’ll at least be impressed by this song)

18. Dan Deacon - Woodywoodpecker (I’ve never liked Dan Deacon. Sorry. But I had on here to what else? Impress boys.)

19. DAN JOHSTON - I LIVE FOR LOVE (DID THEN. DO NOW. WILL ALWAYS.)

Facedown Generation

Over the next month, in celebration of the forthcoming release of Tao Lin’s latest novel, Taipei, we will be featuring a weekly selection of photos taken by the author during his recent trip to Taipei, Taiwan. While there, he took thousands of pictures with his iPhone, pictures which he has divided into albums titled things like “Taipei fashion,” “Taipei carbs,” “Taipei babies,” and “Taipei animals,” among others. The images were taken between January and February 2013 during one of his semiannual visits to the Taiwanese capital, where his parents live. All photos and captions by Tao Lin.

This week’s photos are named after a term* (“Facebook Generation” or “Facedown group”) in Taiwan, which Tao’s mom says she first heard on TV, for people who seem unable to stop looking at their phones while in public.

*literal translation from Mandarin is something like “head-lowered [‘group’ or ‘troupe’].”

But later, after making major progress in my own self-acceptance, I found myself questioning the usefulness presented by the culture and dichotomy of being “in” or “out” of the closet. 1. Serenity Now (actually told my dad this when he asked)

2. Dinner with boyfriend.

3. Weekend in the woods. Like sleeping on fallen flower petals and waking up with dirt in my hair.

4. Patience, so when I do move, my east coast attitude is kept in check.

5. Poems and poetry and more people reading it instead of closing schools, snapchatting (secretly want to join in on the fun, but actually scared), scaring people off, and driving aggressively (or needlessly at all).

6. Grants, kickstarters that people roll their eyes at, secret scholarships, assistantships, anything that can keep me sustainable and scrapy.

7. New Orleans. Enough said.

8. For Philadelphia to love me in my darkest hours when all it wants to do is test me. I guess I could have stayed in my room though.

9. Game nights with wine, cheese, grapes, and bread. Even if it’s for one.

10. Kindess of strangers, because I can be a real sad sap.

1. ROSEANNE IS ON THE OFFICE. OMG!!! I might start watching it again.

2. I really want to make Asparagus Milanese. Got inspired and hungry from watching the CHEW.

3. HODY AND KATHY LEE. I have not seen Kathy Lee since she was on with Regis. So many memories of watching the latter show during the summer. Now she’s really into drinking wine at 11? Learned GREAT TIPS about social media etiquette, spring cleaning, and getting new blinds that don’t require tools (LOVE IT!). Almost liveblogged the entire segment via facebook to the chagrin of my friends.

4. I’m tired of FLO from Progressive.

5. Um Ben Stein is back to doing commercials for eye drops. Unclear about I feel about this.
